Cupboard Library Services

This is an initiative that is aimed at 'creating' libraries in classrooms in local undeserved community schools. The librarians engage the teachers so that they can provide empty cupboards in some classrooms. They are then converted into libraries. The librarians bring 100 titles and they keep them in the cupboard for one month so that they can be issued out by the teacher librarians.

This project has proved to be successful in Laikipia library over the years and it is worth replicating in other regions. This particular library program is innovative because:

  • It demystifies the thinking that libraries are buildings that require huge amounts of money to establish and run
  • It is creative as it makes use of the available resources
  • It promotes the idea of 'libraries without walls'. People are able to access the library remotely
